The Heart Breath
Adapted from Alchemical Healing, A Guide to Spiritual, Physical and Transformational Medicine, page 276
The Heart Breath is a powerful practice for developing ourselves as transformers. It is the nature of breath to carry whatever intention is expressed in the moment, in a way similar to the way it carries the scent of the one that is breathing. When you practice the Heart Breath, the intention is most potently developed during the in-breath, the inspiration. The power gathers at the apex of the breath, that moment when the breath has been inhaled and before it is released intentionally during exhalation. Once the energies of above and below converge and mingle with the fire in your heart center, as directed, the exhale will carry your intention with the love energy from the heart out into the world.
Another aspect of this Heart work is to direct the energy of your heart flame and the powers of Earth and Sky to specific people, places, or situations, or to your self. This creates a powerful healing tool that can be self-directed into any specific part of your body, or through your meridian system in order to reach and refresh your entire physical, emotional, and spiritual being.
Practicing the Heart Breath cultivates the felt experience of sustaining a presence in the heart center. This breath can be used to rekindle your own heart flame as well as to transform your current emotions, feelings, and ambient surroundings into the energies of love and compassion. For our purposes in learning the following exercise, simply focus on your breath, allowing yourself to experience the movement of the breath into and out of your body as described. Being present with your feelings during this exercise keeps it potent, vital and alive.
Heart Breath Meditation
Be sure to ground and center yourself by sitting quietly for a moment before practicing the Heart Breath…
Once you feel grounded and centered, begin by focusing on your inner heart flame, that spark of your soul's fire that lives within the sanctuary of your heart center. As you bring your heart flame into focus, pour love upon it. Love is the fuel. Notice the changes in your heart flame, and how it feels when you add love.
Focus on the heart of the Earth, deep within its central, molten core. Inhale as though you are pulling the power, vitality, and intelligence up with your breath from deep within the Earth. While you intend the movement of your breath, focus on it and feel as the breath moves up though all the strata of the earth, and up through your body to the level of your heart center…
Let the breath mingle for a moment with your inner heart flame, as you continue to pour love upon it… then exhale with the intention of sending your breath and all the love, vitality and intelligence that it carries out though your heart center and in to the world. Notice whatever feelings and sensations arise…
Breathe in that way for a few breaths…
Now bring your attention to the sky above you, and intend to draw your breath from above, as though you are pulling it down from the sky. Feel it flow into your body through your crown as you draw in down to the level of your heart, again allowing it to mingle for a moment with the flame and the love in your heart center… Now exhale with the intention of sending your breath out though your heart center and into the world. Again, notice whatever feelings and sensations arise…
Do this breath several times…
Now draw the breath from Earth and Sky simultaneously, and experience the two breaths coalesce within your heart flame for a moment, merging with your love before you send it out in to the world, or wherever you choose to direct it…
Continue to breathe in this manner—in from above and below, like bellows, holding it for a brief moment as it gathers in your heart and expressing out into the world with love.
Incorporate this breathing practice into your life as often as you can, and remember to be and be mindful of your feelings and sensations as you become more and more conscious of your breath and the power of love.
Hope you enjoy it, I did
